Why did Carnegie Mellon pick Zipcar?
To provide a new, alternative service to having a car on campus, the Transportation subcommittee of the Green Practices Committee looked at car sharing programs and selected Zipcar in Summer 2007 because of their technology and website, that cars are located on campus and dedicated to our campus community users, and their track record of providing successful car sharing programs at many of our peer institutions such as MIT, Harvard, Columbia, Georgetown and Chicago.

Can I get a business membership and use Zipcar for business travel?
At this time, all annual memberships are personal memberships. We continue to evaluate departmental memberships. A Zipcar can be used for business purposes. A member is emailed a summary of charges after each reservation which can be submitted via an expense report for reimbursement.
How does this all work?
You join Zipcar by completing an application. Zipcar processes your application and does the driving record check, and notifies you within a day or two of whether your application has been accepted. Once accepted you will receive a “Zipcard” in the mail that will let you access the vehicles when you have an approved reservation. You then go on-line to make reservations. At the time your reservation begins you go to the vehicle and tap your “Zipcard” on the windshield, and the car unlocks and away you go! At the end of your trip you must return the car to the same location you got it. You will be emailed a summary of your charges for your reservation.
