Your password is the first wall of security that protects your email from unauthorized access. It’s advisable to regularly change your password on your iPhone to keep it secure.
For the passwords that show up in your iPhone’s Security Recommendations (Settings Passwords Security Recommendations), you can select Change Password on Website to change your password or tap on the account, then select Change Password on Website. Can you share your Wi-Fi password from iPhone to iPhone? First, you need to make sure you have an updated version of iOS running on both iPhones. Apple released the Wi-Fi password-sharing feature in iOS 11, so make sure you’re on that or a later version. You’ll also need to turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for both devices. You should also do so when you suspect that someone might know your password or when you’re certain your account has been compromised. Remember to set it to something that’s difficult to guess.
Here’s how to change your email password on iPhone and iPad.
Note: The method below is applicable if you’ve set up iCloud Keychain (which is Apple’s password manager) and added your email account to it. More on this after the steps.
Further, in the demonstration below, I’m using Gmail (which happens to be the most popular). But if you use Yahoo, Outlook, Hey, or any other email account, please tap on their name; the steps are similar.
How to change Gmail password on iPhone and iPad [iOS 14]
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap on Passwords. Authenticate it using Face ID, Touch ID, or passcode to view saved passwords.
- Scroll down the list of added passwords and tap on google.com.
- If your current Gmail password is weak, reused, or appeared in a data breach, you will see a warning in Security Recommendation. Tap on Change Password on Website. (after this go to step 6)
- If you don’t see any warning but still wish to change your password, then under WEBSITE, tap on the tiny Safariicon next to accounts.google.com.
- Depending on whether you’re logged into your Gmail account in Safari or not, you will see either the login page or the Google Account page (see the screenshots below).
- If you see the login page, enter your current password (or add it from iCloud Keychain after authenticating with Face ID, Touch ID, or passcode) and tap Next. Now, enter the new password and finally tap CHANGE PASSWORD.
- If you see the Google Accounts page (which usually happens when you tap on the tiny Safari icon in step 5), tap Personal info from the top → PASSWORD → manually enter your current password or let iCloud Keychain do it for you. Finally, type the new password twice where prompted and tap CHANGE PASSWORD.
If Your iCloud Keychain isn’t enabled or synced:
In this case, you’ll have to visit the email website in a web browser like Safari. Or, you can open that email’s official app and change the password there.
For example, open Gmail → tap on the menu icon from the top left → tap Settings → select an account → Manage your Google Account → Security → Password.
Change your Gmail password on iPhone and iPad [iOS 13]
The foundational steps to update the Gmail password in iOS 13 remains the same as above. Let me sum it up for you real quick:
- Open Settings.
- Tap on Passwords & Accounts.
- Tap on Website & App Passwords. Authenticate it with Face ID, Touch ID, or iPhone passcode.
- Tap on google.com. If you’re using a weak or reused password, iOS 13 will ask you to change it. For this, tap Change Password on Website.
- If you don’t see the above link to change your password, take a look at the site address (accounts.google.com) under the header labeled WEBSITE.
- Now, open it in Safari or any other browser of choice. Then follow steps 6, 7, and 8 of the above heading (iOS 14).
