Walmart Canada announced a number of changes to its media business last week signalling its commitment to becoming a bigger player in advertising for the brands it sells. “Our vision is to be the number one omnichannel provider of advertiser solutions in Canada,” said Dana Toering, vice-president of what is now known as Walmart Connect.
Walmart Canada is adding automated kiosk pickup to one of its stores in the Toronto area, which, the company says, will be the first of its kind in that country.
In a corporate blog post published yesterday, Walmart Canada outlined a number of moves the company is making to accelerate its e-commerce efforts, including:

- Building out a 22,000 sq. ft. space inside the Scarborough West Supercentre that will automate online grocery picking and packing that is six times faster than manual order picking
- Expanding grocery pickup to 60 more stores this year
- Piloting “ring scanner” technology that allows workers to pick and scan items hands-free
But the new feature we are most interested in is the new automated grocery pickup. According to Walmart Canada’s blog post, these new automated kiosks will “serve as vending machines for online grocery orders and can serve up to five customers simultaneously.” To use the kiosk, customers pull into a dedicated parking spot, enter a code into the machine and their order will appear in under two minutes.
All of these new, automated features are being built in partnership with Dematic, and will launch later this year.
This isn’t the first automated kiosk we’ve written about. Albertsons debuted its own robot-powered kiosk for grocery pickup at a Jewel-Osco in Chicago. But to our knowledge, this is the first public mention of automated kiosk pickup from Walmart in North America.
In January, Walmart announced that it was partnering with Dematic, Fabric and Alert Innovation to deploy automated fulfillment centers to “dozens” of locations. Automated kiosks weren’t mentioned at that time, but it’s safe to assume that if Walmart Canada is testing them out, they will make their way to the U.S. at some point.
As we covered this week, a ton of resources are flowing into the online grocery sector. Smaller online grocery startups around the world are raising a lot of money, and big players like Walmart, Albertsons and Kroger are making big investments in their own e-commerce infrastructure.
The reason for this big push into grocery e-commerce is that online grocery sales hit $9.3 billion in January, and is projected to hit $250 billion and take up 21.5 percent of total grocery sales by 2025. Retailers are bolstering their e-commerce capabilities now, to accommodate the growth that is to come.

It work – today we knew about a PS5 restock and instant sent the information to our Twitter followers so that they could buy the console before anyone else. Other restock locations in the US got the same treatment this week, including Target, Sam's Club, Antonline and Sony Direct. There was no Walmart PS5 restock this week, but we should see more stock next week, while Amazon is suspiciously overdue.

Next Best Buy PS5 restock date

We just saw the PS5 Best Buy restock today, and that means the electronics retailer is 6-for-6 on restocking the Sony console on Fridays. We caution that PS5 inventory is still – and we've only seen PS5 Disc for the past two weeks. There was a 0% chance of a PS5 Digital Edition restock, according to our restock tracker, and that was correct.

Best Buy PS5 restock tips
Buying the PS5 at Best Buy isn't easy. Basically, you need to click on the yellow 'Add to Cart' button, wait for the greyed out button to cycle through (it can take a while) and turn yellow again. Click it to add to your cart again and check out as quickly as possible. Jake Randall, YouTuber and restock tracker aficionado, has excellent PS5 restock tips in this video.
Maybe the most important thing to keep in mind is to have patience. We receive thousands of replies from people who check the link and give up instantly saying 'Sold out.' Inventory happens in waves at PS5 retailers, and giving up too soon is the biggest mistake we see people make.
Amazon PS5 restock date

Our white whale. Amazon is overdue for a PS5 restock, but nothing is ever confirmed at the online retail giant. We were sent information that a restock was scheduled for Thursday, March 18 with 46,000 consoles up for grabs, but that was last week. The Amazon PS5 restock date clearly got shifted – and we're not sure why. Amazon did have Xbox inventory already this week. Maybe it'll offload those 46,000 console in inventory next week. But really, who knows?

The next Walmart PS5 restock date may be Thursday, April 1, according to the recent pattern that the retailer has followed with its PS5 drops. We didn't see a restock this week for the PS5 (only Xbox Series X restock via Microsoft's All Access bundle). While we think Walmart may stick to its pattern, we also know takes the longest of any retailer to ship the console to consumers, so this one is far from confirmed.

Target PS5 restock date

Target employees have been the best at tipping us off at when there will be a PS5 restock, and it seems to be happening every two weeks and right on time. It's always been in the morning, recently between 7am EDT and and 9am EDT. Be warned, the PS5 restock time can fluctuate beyond that too, judging from past Target PS5 orders at launch, but it hasn't changed too much recently. Like Walmart, Target inventory has been light, but two weeks should be enough catch-up time for the retailer.

Sony's official stores restocks more often than any single retailer and it uses a lottery system to keep things fair – and keep bots at bay. You need a PSN account and it's one PS5 console per household. With a virtual queue that's randomized, we're always 'in line' for the PS5 and attempting to reach checkout. About every other week, we can get through (but we never completely buy PS5 – just going through the motions for reporting purposes).
Sam's Club and Costco PS5 restock

We've seen Sam's Club and Costco PS5 restock activity each week, but inventory at these US wholesale retailers is always unannounced and extremely limited. Costco requires to be a member to buy a PS5, while Sam's Club tries to lure you into buying a membership – or allows you to sign up as a guest. At both stores, the PS5 restock lasts about five minutes or less, especially after we tweet about it via our Twitter tracker. But five minutes is a lifetime in this game.
